In the course of the energy transition, electricity production using solar modules is playing an increasingly important role. Solar parks and conventional ground-mounted systems are also being built on land that was previously used for agriculture. In contrast, an agrivoltaic system combines agricultural and electricity production and can thus attenuate the land use conflict between food and energy production.
The University of Hohenheim has been active in German agrivoltaics research since the very beginning, including research on Germany's first pilot plant on the Heggelbach community farm in Herdwangen-Schönach. The research focuses on the ecological, economic and social interactions of agrivoltaics with the environment, as well as the altered growth conditions in agrivoltaics and their effects on agricultural production. The University of Hohenheim is optimally positioned through its various institutes and departments to pursue interdisciplinary questions and to scientifically accompany innovations such as agrivoltaics on the path to the energy transition.
